Didn't get that promotion?

“It doesn’t matter that you can. It doesn’t even matter that you did. You won’t get the opportunity to do it if you’re not perceived as such or seen as such.” ~ Carla Harris

I coach professionals every day who feel overlooked for promotions and opportunity at work and they wonder why they have to keep proving themselves when their 'work speaks for itself'.

In case you didn't know, your work alone will never speak for itself. It doesn't matter if you think you can, it matters whether OTHERS think you can. All the decisions that are made about your career are made when you are not in the room.

Here are two action items for you to do in the week ahead:

  1. Identify what the three adjectives you want people to say about you when you are not in the room. These three adjectives should align to what the organization and your leadership team values. If you don't know what your organization or leadership team values or measures, then,

  2. Speak to your direct manager and ask them what they value about you and what is important to them right now and for the future for the department. Then, focus on those activities to differentiate yourself from your peers.

Truth is, it's not about you being someone different. It's about aligning yourself to what the organization values AND what the organization measures.

Work smarter, not harder. Focus on what your leadership team or organization expressly values and improve your perception.
